Description

Something I have seen all around the Internet is fans trying to visualize a map of Sonic's world, be it the Sega or Archie canons.
And there are a lot of those around.
So, what do you say? Will you help me complete this one?
Welcome to my World Map Project!
In order to help establish my own canon in the Sonic multiverse, I wanted to design a world map displaying as many locations as possible.
My written stories, Sonic Riders : Sky Brought Down and Rise in Revolution, take place within the SEGA's games continuity, and so this map aim is to display as accurately as it is possible the locations visited and referenced in these games. The layout of this map was designed over the one seen in Shadow the Hedgehog, being the only official map I could find, but has its continents named as they where in Sonic Unleashed, given that the culture and geography of each land accommodates to this map as well. However, as you can tell for the large amount of these kinds of maps there are out there, it is no easy task to pinpoint all these cities, landscapes and islands....
So i figured I should make this an Open Project! What does that mean?
It means anyone can contribute to this map, helping me with missing places or correcting the location of already placed  marks.
Therefore, this map will be updated anytime new information is added, and those who contribute with information will be tagged, so they be recognized in this joined effort!

General Info
  • I build this map on my own canon. Therefore, information on locations follow the events that had transpired since Sonic Adventure and (mainly) up to Sonic Unleashed, while the names of some places and events being invented/changed to fit my canon. Anyway, this map should accommodate for the SEGA's canon as well. I suppose the best way of explaining my canon would be that it goes more in depth with the events that didn't transpired during Sonic '06 (and therefore what happened instead of it) and historical details that haven't been properly explained (Like GUN's apparent ignorance of worldwide events or Shadow being hunted down and imprisoned again).

  • Regarding Unleashed locations (Spagonia, Chun-nan, etc.), the names given in the game seem to refer as the continent more than the country or city depicted themselves. I decided those names to be what the nations are called. Being so, there are 8 Great Nations. ApotosSpagoniaHoloskaShamarMazuriChun-nan and Adabat, plus the United Federation.

  • The Town Stages Sonic visits in Unleashed have their names invented, as they do not seem to have a name at all. Added some of the Town Stages as... well, Towns proper, while leaving the Action Stages as landmarks. This is up to debate and if anyone can find a more fitting name to a town/city/village, then just let's discuss it below in the comments. As I said, this is an Open Project and that means all opinions will be heard and considered as long as you don't bash others' opinions

  • Not planning to do a physical map. Anyone can, however, feel free to make one using this one as a base, as long as credit is given
Oh look, seems I actually went and did it XD

  • Seas/Oceans not named, as I can't really think of fitting names for them. (Anyone who can come up with a name?)

  • There are games I haven't played myself (Like Sonic Chronicles), so some info is bound to have missed stuff mentioned or shown in those games.

  • Any info that should be corrected should be discussed in the comments.

  • Mobians are a numerous species, although humans are the dominant species on the planet. That's also the reason why the planet is called Earth by humans, and Mobius by mobians. Overall, both clash with each other's interests, with both sides tending to hold a racial prejudice towards the other. However, examples of cooperation and friendship between humans and mobians do exist, such as the case of Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends, who have saved the planet on more than one occasion.

Earth/Mobius World Map - References
  • United Federation : The land of technology. A set of nations united under the same flag, with settlements all over the continent. Its most outstanding trait would be its military might, as seen by the force of the Guardian Units of Nations (GUN) and the great amount of technology poured into the development of weaponry and defense systems. Despite the advanced technology at its disposal, Many of the United Federation's cities have kept their overall structures as they were the past century, with small changes due to technological breakthroughs. There are, however, cities that stand out for their futuristic design, though these appear to be more like "robotized metropolis" than actual human settlements. The UF keeps fairly good relations with the rest of the nations, though it has been proven that conflicts outside of its territory is of little concern unless it affects it in some way. Few mobians live in UF territory, as the several incidents and catastrophes have burned a prejudice against them in human minds, often blaming them for said events. The few that do live there, however, have adjusted well and gained some trust with their neighbor humans. Humans don't take kindly to new mobian arrivals in the neighborhood.
    • Notable Locations
      • Central City : Capital of the UF. The President of the United Federation resides here. It was Vastly destroyed by the Black Arms, but it has been rebuilt since then
      • Station Square : Coastal city and former tourist attraction. Was destroyed years ago by the water monster Chaos. Currently reduced to a tumble-down shanty-town. Nonetheless, its surviving residents carry on as best they can, the town does count with an airfield of sorts
      • Mystic Ruins : an island that houses the ruins of an ancient Echidna civilization. Over its skies soars Angel Island, home of the Master Emerald
      • (New) Westopolis : After the Black Arms Invasion, the city was almost completely burned to the ground. It was rebuilt in the following years.
      • Empire City : The city of skyscrapers. It escaped the catastrophe with relatively minor damage dealt to it before the alien threat was eliminated.
      • Metal City : Massive skyscrapers and fast cars populate this futuristic city, home to a course famous from the first ever Extreme Gear Grand Prix.
      • GUN Bases : The only known bases are Prison Island and GUN Fortress. Prison Island housed the most dangerous threats to the UF for a long time before its destruction, including Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow the Hedgehog and even Sonic the Hedgehog. While the main base was blown up the island stands, though its jungle and rivers are polluted by toxic waste spilled from the ruins. GUN Fortress is thought to be GUN's HQ, and contains huge amounts of armaments. Built deep inside the caverns of a mountain, its existence was unheard of until the Black Arms attempted to wipe it out. Both GUN representatives and the government still deny the existence of said base to the present day.
      • Glyphic Canyon : Located at the south of the continent. A region full of ruins of an unknown lost civilization, with access to most of them being sealed off by unidentified means. It was later discovered that these ruins were in fact of Black Arms origin, as the alien invaders rallied here and unveiled the mystery, showing that in fact these were airships of great power and technologically superior to Earth's machinery, as even Dr. Eggman had a hard time dealing with them in an all-out stratospheric fleets battle.

  • Apotos : The land of meadows. Its territory consists of the west peninsula of the continent. Of all the world's nations, it is the only one who hasn't taken a high-technology approach. Its relation with the  nations is that of a raw materials producer and exporter. Having no big metropolises, Apotos managed to avoid open conflict with anyone, the only turmoil experience by them being Earth's shattering by Dark Gaia's Awakening and its Minions terrorizing the land's towns. Human folk are actually welcome to any mobian outsider, the same applying to the reverse case. Mobian settlements are scarce, however.
    • Notable Locations
      • Windmill Town : A port town located at the coastal region, famous for its Chocolate Chip Sundae Supreme. It was visited by Sonic and Tails, along with the then-amnesiac Light Gaia, who saved the town from Dark Gaia's minions.

  • Mazuri : The  land of the wild. Mazuri holds few human villages and tribes, all of them underdeveloped. known for its reddish-brown soil, desert expanses, and its large baobab trees, it is pretty isolated from the rest of the world, although it keeps a commercial route with Spagonia and Shamar. It is, however the place where humanity is believed to have taken its first steps as a species, and a great deal of ruins from ancient civilizations can be found amid the sand, holding a great archaeological value. Mobians, like humans, have settled themselves in these lands as well, but keep little to no relation with them. In fact, both sides appear to be quite aggressive towards the other. The Black Arms presence in Mazuri was strong during their invasion, but their intentions there are not known until today.
    • Notable Locations
      • Savannah Citadel : The only still-standing city in Mazuri, a city of sand and mud that houses the majority of the mazurian human population. It was briefly invaded by Dr. Eggman and his robots during Dark Gaia's Awakening, but Sonic the Hedgehog dealt with it soon after.
      • Savannah Village : A small settlement relatively close to the Citadel
  • Shamar : The land of deserts and mysteries. Located at the southwest of the continent, Shamar is a very unforgiving place and the only habitable places are those that keep an oasis close by. Despite this, Humans have made marvelous settlements amid the desert lands. Mobians live as nomadic tribes among the desert, often guiding travelers and lost souls. Shamar and the United Federation have been involved in disputes over lands rich in fossil fuels the past years, but Spagonia has arbitrated over them before it could escalate into an open conflict
    • Notable Locations
      • Oasis City : A city of merchants and tourists hotspot. It is known for the annual festival celebrated there, called Hallowmoon, where the residents shift their daily and nightly routines in honor the moon and sun. It was another city attacked by Dr. Eggman during Dark Gaia's Awakening.
      • Babylon : Supposedly the birthplace of civilization. It is said that sometimes a floating island rises from the sands, but most disregard this as a mirage. However, the ruins scattered around show depictions not only of humans but of mobians as well, implying that both species have ties in the distant past.

  • Chun-nan : The land of traditions. Located at the east of the continent, it's a nation that perfectly merges the past with the future, possessing a technological superiority that rivals that of the United Federations, but keeping the traditions of old still present. Their customs often come out as exotic or even plainly weird to outsiders, but perhaps  it's because of that that Chun-nan is the nation where many mobians can live among humans, and even build their own settlements freely. People from all around the world are attracted to this land for their breathtaking landscapes of mountains and rivers, the Dragon Road being walked over all year by tourists, and also by their fireworks displays and delicious meat-buns, among other delicacies. Given their standing on equal footing in terms of armament and technological development with the United Federation, both nations keep an eye on each other. As their interest often stand against each other's, the tension between these two nations have been increasing over the years. The Black Arms disabled Chun-nan's military defenses swiftly after arriving, leaving GUN forces as the only standing army to protect Earth
    • Notable Locations
      • Serpent Valley :  A small city among the tall mountains of the East. On its outskirts is located the starting point of the Dragon Road, a journey many set on to complete to achieve illumination. It was invaded by Dr. Eggman's robots until Sonic cleared it of.
      • Mountain Town : Foggy mountains and waterfalls, giant dragon statues, bamboo groves, and lily pad-covered rivers and ponds define this traditional settlement
  • Spagonia : The land of culture and knowledge. Spagonia has formed and educated the brightest minds of the world. It occupies the north of the continent, and has the most beautiful designed cities the world have ever seen, resembling the elegant architecture of the past millennium. It's also in Spagonia that most scientific breakthroughs are accomplished in fields ranging from medicine to bio-technology. Spagonia stands on neutral ground with the other nations, and often serves as an arbiter when an international conflict arises, although it is no secret that the United Federation and Spagonia have had many differences in how to deal with said conflicts over the years. Mobians have met a divided response from humans here some welcoming them with open arms and others driving them away from their settlements. In the cases they were accepted, they can live peacefully among humans, and have often been the ones who have discovered an artifact or created a new technology for the better of humans and mobians alike.
    • Notable Locations
      • Clock Town : A city famous for its academic record and its dominating Clock Tower at its center.
  • Adabat : The land of jungles. At the southeast of the continent, Adabat hold many wild jungles filled with exotic plant and animal life, along with hidden ruins of long forgotten cultures. Humans and mobians alike have built small settlements along the coastal region, as the jungles pose a serious threat to any attempt of settlement. Both humans and mobians tend to mind their own business, but cooperation between them is not something unheard of.
    • Notable Locations
      • Jungle Village : A beautiful stilt house village blessed with plenty of sun, wind and water and the villagers there are laid back.

  • Holoska : The land of snow. Being the most northern region, Holoska is covered in ice and snow. Few people, be it human or mobian, make home amid the tundra, making no more than small villages out of igloos. Much like Mazuri, the inhabitants of Holoska are isolate from the rest of the world, and the majority of events.

  • Independent Lands : Small nations or islands that do not belong to any of the 8 Great Nations.
    • Notable Locations
      • Monopole : An independent island off the western coasts of the United Federation. A very advanced and extremely high-tech streamlined city area. It has tube-like roads with hover-cars, colossal and awe-inspiring building structures and robot-workers walking on the streets. The island also counts with an aquatic-themed amusement park and a set of colossal ecospheres containing and preserving flora and wildlife from all around the world. MeteorTech, an international weapons and security manufacturing company, had its HQ in Monopole's desert area in the island's eastern region, with many factories built on the island as well. Their worker and security robots went recently on a global rampage, although the most severely affect areas were Monopole itself (60% of its main city being devastated) and UF's West Coast. Sudden climatic changes and the presence of an alarming outburst of electromagnetic fields in the area led many scientists to believe there was a gravitational anomaly of a colossal scale for a small period of time before the robotic rampage came to an end. However, UF's representatives have denied this sort of phenomena occurring on the island. This, along with the lack of participation during this incident, caused both GUN and the United Federation to be criticized for their negligence in what could have been a potential end-of-the-world scenario. A joined rebuilding effort funded by Spagonia and UF's governments (the latter seeking to better its image) has set to restore the land.
      • Angel Island : Otherwise known just as the Floating Island. A sacred land that soars high up in the sky over the Mystic Ruins thanks to the eternal power of the Master Emerald. It is protected from all outsiders by its only inhabitant, Knuckles the Echidna. It has been proven that the huge island will plummet down if its power source is removed by any means, as it was seen falling into the oceans some days before the Chaos Incident and soon after rise again.
      • Kingdom of Soleanna : Located at the northern region next to Spagonia, Soleanna is a constitutional monarchy, with an economy dominated by tourism and precision machinery. It's capital is located in Kingdom Valley, while it's main city is Soleanna's New City, also known as the City of Water. It is there that Soleanna's Sun Festival is held, in honor of their deity Solaris, presided by their ruler. Despite not being part of Spagonia, Soleanna keeps close ties with it, and shares much of the tech and machinery that is developed in the neighbor nation. Currently, the sovereignty of Solanna has been given to the late Duke's daughter, Princess Elise the Third.

It's been years since I first saw this, and it's still got a place in my heart. I come back to it every now and then.
